03 · Search like an operator · Chapter 05 of 35

Build a quality-first job funnel

A search is a pipeline, not a mood. Discover, verify, qualify, tailor, apply, follow up, interview, decide. Anything else is scrolling.

10 min read

Endless scrolling feels like work and produces no evidence. Operators run a funnel with stages, capacity limits, and a weekly review. You will not apply to 40 jobs a day. You will run 8–15 serious applications a week once the system is built—or fewer if you are interviewing.

The pipeline

  1. 01Discover — reputable job boards, official career pages, associations, alumni, professional groups, and referrals.
  2. 02Verify — confirm the employer and the role independently. Lookalike domains and ‘we hired you, ship this laptop, buy gift cards’ are still common.
  3. 03Qualify — does the core work match evidence you actually possess? If not, do not spend an hour tailoring.
  4. 04Tailor — 20–40 minutes, not four hours. Move truthful language and proof. Do not rewrite your biography.
  5. 05Apply — follow the employer’s instructions exactly (portal, PDF vs. DOCX, questions, work sample).
  6. 06Follow up — one professional touch where you have a real contact. Then return to the pipeline.
  7. 07Interview — only possible if you prepared before the invitation arrived.
  8. 08Decision — compare offers with the matrix, not adrenaline.

What to track on every application

If it is not in the tracker, it did not happen. You need: company, role, URL, date, resume version, contact, stage, follow-up date, outcome, and one note on why you were a fit. That data is how you diagnose a broken funnel in Chapter 20.

Do this now

  • Open Workbook → Tracker and log any applications you already sent.
  • Set a weekly cap before you open a job board today.
